A shock for Subaru fans at the Geneva Motor Show with the debut of an all-new sports car – and its rear-wheel-drive.
The all-new model is scheduled for production early next year.
In Geneva, Subaru presented only the technical details, keeping the final looks for later. Subaru says the newcomer will be the world’s only front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car powered by a horizontally-opposed engine.
The concept shown in Switzerland saw the engine mounted a long way back, to combine with the relatively light weight and low center of gravity of the ‘Boxer’ engine to provide genuine sports car driving dynamics.
Subaru says the new sports car will run a strut front suspension and double-wishbone rear. The overall dimensions will be compact (almost identical to Toyota’s FT-86 II at 4,200mm long, 1,770mm wide, 1,270mm high and a wheelbase of 2,570mm) and weight will be minimized.
