While the local SsangYong importer restricts its range to SUVs and the Stavic people mover, back home in Korea, SsangYong does manufacture passenger vehicles and chose the recent Seoul Motor Show to unveil its KEV2 electric-powered hatchback.
Based on the platform of the recently-launched SsangYong Korando compact SUV, the KEV2 is designed to be a more city-focused vehicle reminiscent of the Nissan Dualis.
SsangYong says the KEV2 aims to provide the functional needs of young, active urban dwellers (a tablet PC is mounted in the center console) and its looks reflect the company’s its ‘simple-but-strong’ styling philosophy.
Weighing-in at 1750kgs, the SsangYong KEV2 provides a driving range of up to 180kms from its 120kW electric motor and 35kWh lithium-ion battery pack. As per all current electric vehicles, a 30-minute ‘quick-charge’ system is fitted, or overnight recharging takes between eight to 10 hours.
Te battery pack is stored under the cargo area so SsangYong has maintained a fair degree of luggage space (often a challenge with pure electric vehicles).
“The unveiling of the KEV2 is a strong signal that SsangYong’s plans for an electric vehicle range are back on track following the company’s emergence from court-protected bankruptcy and its stronger future under new owner Mahindra and Mahindra,” SsangYong said.
