And altogether a more clever package.

Skoda Teases ’19 Rapid Spaceback – More Tech, Sharper Looks

‘Simply Clever’ carmaker Skoda have begun teasing their new upcoming compact car, which they won’t name but everyone knows is the 2019 Rapid Spaceback. Shown previously as the Skoda Vision RS concept car (albeit in dressed-up performance form), the Rapid Spaceback is expected to make its in-the-metal debut before the year is up, with market arrivals slated for mid-2019.

Skoda themselves say that the Vision RS from the Paris Motor Show was the precursor to this production model, saying that it “translates the emotive design language of the study” into a showroom-ready model. It’ll make use of the A0-MQB platform as expected, which it’ll share with cars like the Volkswagen Polo & SEAT Ibiza, and will pack quite a number of upgrades over the outgoing Rapid Spaceback as a result.

With the use of A0 MQB, the new Rapid Spaceback will be able to offer greater driver assistance technology like autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist and so on, as well as convenience features like a digital instrument cluster and the very-latest infotainment systems from the Volkswagen Group. It’ll also open up better powertrain options too, allowing the fitment of the most advanced TSI turbo-petrol mills available.

The Vision RS concept car notably featured a 1.5-litre TSI engine mated to an electric motor (fed by a 13kWh battery), to produce a combined system output of 180kW. It also boasted a 70km all-electric range and a 7.1-second century sprint time, both of which are incredibly impressive given the (claimed) fuel consumption average of just 1.4L/100km. It’s unknown if a production version of this engine will find its way into the Rapid Spaceback (or a Rapid Spaceback RS), though you can bet our fingers are crossed.

With Skoda saying that the all-new compact car will mark “the next development for the current design language,” we should expect to see a more sensible, production-ready version of the Vision RS’ snazzy cockpit. Elements like the lower touchscreen and crystal gear lever will probably be binned, but the electric parking brake will remain. What we’re curious to see is if the steering wheel centre will feature the ‘SKODA’ script on it as it did in the concept car, in place of the ‘Arrow’ logo that Skoda’s have traditionally worn.

We were very excited when we clapped eyes on the Vision RS, with its versatile performance-led powertrain, innovative features, and mature design language. We can only hope to see that the concept gets translated into production faithfully.
