And 813Nm. And supercharger whine.

Roush Introduces Upgrade Pack: 522kW Mustang, Anyone?

If you’re lucky enough to own a Ford Mustang GT, we doubt that you’ve ever thought that there wasn’t quite enough grunt coming out of the 5.0-litre Coyote V8.

As standard, the 5.0-litre produces a not-inconsiderable 343kW and 569Nm, which is enough to rocket the standard Mustang GT toward the horizon with a rorty soundtrack that will undoubtedly leave you going for longer than you should. The Mustang GT is immensely popular for a reason, and the driving experience provided by the V8 is exactly what you’d expect from a Pony car, and is sufficient for most to get their Americana fix.

Roush Introduces Upgrade Pack: 522kW Mustang, Anyone?

But long-standing Ford tuner Roush has different ideas. At the ongoing SEMA show in Las Vegas, they’ve introduced a supercharger upgrade kit that gives the Mustang more than an incremental step up insofar as performance is concerned. The upgrade bumps power up by 180kW (ish) to 522kW, while torque now stands at a staggering 813Nm. Amazing what a little forced induction can do.

“Our teams have collaborated to create the most highly-engineered, tested, and performing supercharger kit on the market. The combination of the 2018 5.0-litre engine and our all-new, fully-integrated 2650 supercharger yields incredible, no-compromise performance.” — Jack Roush, Chairman of the Board, Roush Performance

While no prices for this kit were detailed, Roush did go into detail saying that every supercharger kit comes with all of the related hardware for installation, as well as custom performance calibration for optimum power delivery. When installed by a Ford technician, it’ll carry a 58,000km warranty valid over three years, and doesn’t affect the vehicle’s factory warranty. In case anyone’s wondering, it provides 12psi of boost, and demands 93RON fuel.

“Ford and Roush have teamed up on performance for years on and off the track. This new supercharger is another great example of our innovation in performance, greatly improving horsepower and torque so people can enjoy two of our most iconic vehicles even more.” — Doug White, Manager (Global Performance Parts), Ford Motor Company

The Roush supercharger kit will be made available through various Ford and Roush channels in the United States come early 2018, but there’s no mention of the upgrade being made available locally. We suspect that local legislation may take issue with the amount of noise a Roush-charged Mustang GT could make, though we’re allowed to be hopeful.

The Ford Mustang was recently updated for the 2018 model year, and packs a myriad of upgrades all over the place, including a new ‘Drag Strip’ mode, a 10-speed automatic transmission, and a handful of minor aesthetic revisions. You can read more about that here. But if you’d rather up the driver involvement rather than the power, the Blue Oval has also detailed a Level 2 Performance Pack for the Mustang, which you can read about here
