Now we know what Rolls Royce thinks the kind of cars the super rich will demand to ride in come the next century.
BMW is celebrating their 100-year anniversary in 2016, but we’d be surprised if anyone following the motoring industry isn’t already very aware of this. And while there have been many concepts, one-offs, and special editions in the first half of the year alone, the Bavarian automaker isn’t going to let its subsidiary brands get left out of the actions.
Enter the VISION NEXT 100 from Rolls Royce, or the 103EX by its codename, a pure concept car that is the super-luxury marque’s first in a very long time that also attempts to foresee the cars it will be producing in the future (or a different dimension).
Tackling the electric and autonomous question in a way that only Rolls Royce can, the 103EX is both powered not by any fossil fuel and has no driving controls inside it whatsoever save for an AI presence called ‘Eleanor’ that acts as your concierge and host while in the car that has one large couch-like seat for occupants that faces a massive display.
It’s also huge, measuring 5.9 metres and a little over 1.5 metres tall, throwing all ideas about small and space-efficient driverless cars out the window because that’s no way to make an entrance.
The exterior is quite futuristic but also features clear nods to car designs of yesteryear, with thin wheels that are separate from the main body, housed in its own aerodynamic fenders, and a triangular bonnet shape that puts one in mind of a yacht than a car. The sloping roof canopy swings open for entry and small steps slide out to really cements its homage to a horse drawn carriage experience.
Rolls Royce Motor Cars’ Director of Design, Giles Taylor, said: “The Rolls-Royce patron will continue to be a famous figure in the future. I envision that the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 will play a key role in these people’s lives, guiding and conveying them effortlessly through their life’s journey in an exquisite sanctuary where they can reflect in peace ahead of arriving in the grandest style.”
