60,000 Porsche EVs annually by 2021.

German luxury car marque Porsche appears to have its sights set firmly on electrification, with its CEO suggesting that EV tech could feature in as much as half of its total lineup. The brand’s boss went on to set lofty ambitions for its electric vehicle program, during  an interview with German business publication Manager Magazin

Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said that the company’s facility in Zuffenhausen is now preparing for an annual production capacity of 60,000 electric vehicles come 2019, when the production-version of the Mission-E concept goes on the market. Two years afterwards, an EV SUV coupe is expected to come online as well. Previously, Mission-E was expected to sell to the tune of 20,000 units annually, and the production capacity touted by Blume puts the new targets three times higher than initially expected.

Part of the surge is expected to come from the brands’ ever-popular Macan SUV, which will be fully-electric once it moves into its second generation in 2021-2022. So with no less than three fully-electric vehicles on the cards, pundits suggest that an annual sales figure of around 115,000 electric Porsches could be entirely possible. A lot of Porsche’s electric dreams rest on the Mission-E, which claimed a power output of some 440kW and a century sprint time of “under 3.5-seconds” in concept form, along with 500km of range on a single charge and an 800-volt proprietary charging system that can rejuice a Mission-E from naught to 80% charged in just 15-minutes.

No less than €1-billion (or about $1.5-billion) have been allocated to upgrade Porsche’s facilities in time for 2019, which is when Porsche expects to sell its very first electric car to customers. The move to electrification lines up with European targets to tighten emissions regulations on both cars and the facilities that produce them, with companies like Volvo moving to electrify its entire lineup by 2019
