Volvo To Be Totally Electrified By 2019

In a bold move, Volvo Cars has announced today that from 2019 onwards, all Volvo vehicles will feature mild-hybrid to full-electric powertrains, as the Swedish company makes a huge step towards the future of mobility. There will be “no Volvo without an electric motor,” the company says. Today marks the death of the purely internal-combustion powertrain.

“This is about the customer. People increasingly demand electrified cars, and we want to respond to our customers’ current and future needs. This announcement marks the end of the solely combustion engine-powered car. Volvo Cars has stated that it plans to have sold a total of 1-million electrified cars by 2025. When we said it, we meant it. This is how we’re going to do it.” - Håkan Samuelsson, President & Chief Executive, Volvo Cars

Come 2019, Volvo will have moved its entire portfolio into electrification, and it’ll be the first premium carmaker to have done so. This move sits in line with Volvo’s commitment to minimise its environmental impact, as part of a crusade to make cities cleaner. It’s not just its cars that are going greener, as 2025 is also the target date for its production facilities to achieve carbon neutrality in its processes.

Between 2019 and 2021, the resurgent Swedish marque will launch no less than five fully-electric models, three of which will bear the Iron Mark, where the other two will be high-performance electrified models from its new performance offshoot Polestar. No details on these models were released, though the company did go on to explain that these five EVs will be supplemented by a family of petrol- and diesel-hybrid cars, in both plug-in hybrid and mild-hybrid setups, “representing one of the broadest electrified car offerings of any car maker.”

“You can now pick and choose whichever electrified Volvo you wish,” Samuelsson said.
