Should there be enough demand, Peugeot will gladly make sportier versions of the 2008 and 3008 crossovers to complement the already rather accomplished 208 GTi and 308 GTi.
Currently, both the 2008 and newly released 3008 come in their most aggressive and powerful guise as a GT variant, typically with a high-output turbodiesel under the bonnet.
The GT and GT-Line trim in the Peugeot hierarchy adds sportier interior and exterior details, larger wheels, and often a sportier suspension setup, but the engines are taken from the crop of motors that were initially available at launch. That may change as the French automaker may want to explore the hot crossover market to rival such cars as the Nissan Juke Nismo.
According to a report by Autocar UK, Laurent Blanchet, head of product development at Peugeot, said: “The strategy of the brand is to have upper versions, GT, GT Line and GTi, and this strategy will be developed in all the range.”
Should market impetus convince Peugeot that a GTi-badged SUV makes sense, it will likely remain front wheel drive despite the higher general ride height and now-increased power output. They are currently developing an all-wheel drive plug-in hybrid version of the 3008, but that technology will probably remain out of production GTi models for this generation.
