There isn’t enough camo in the world to hide these cars.
When you’re working on hotly-anticipated cars, it’s nigh-on impossible to keep them out of the public eye effectively. This applies to anything from a Volkswagen Polo up to things like the Rolls-Royce Phantom.
So you can imagine there must’ve been a degree of cynicism going round the Chevrolet camouflage team working to tape up and disguise the next-generation C8 Corvette and Silverado Heavy Duty. One is enormous, and the other distinctive. Unless you shove them in a container, someone’s going to notice.
And notice they did, while the future models were on test in Colorado. The two cars were tailed for about 16km by a chap and his video camera (in what appears to be a Subaru BRZ). While we don’t get to see much of the two cars, we do get to hear them.
For the Corvette, we know that it won’t use the same 4.2-litre biturbo V8 that’s presently available in the 2019 Cadillac CT6 V-Sport. That dismissal was provided by Cadillac boss Johan de Nysschen, though GM may ‘extensively retool’ that engine before going on to say that it’s a new/different mill. What is evident is that it sounds brilliant, though we don’t hear all its glory due to the voiceover.
As for the Silverado HD, we know that under the bonnet we could find similar engines as employed by the current Silverado 2500. In that guise, the Silverado is offered with a 6.0-litre V8 petrol mill (268kW/514Nm), as well as a 6.6-litre Duramax V8 turbodiesel with 331kW/1232Nm.
With the new ‘Vette testing in public already, and reports that the model was teased at a dealer event earlier this month, we’re starting to get excited that the model may debut sooner rather than later. Informed parties say that an announcement is expected before the end of the year, but we reckon we might hear more of the first-ever mid-engined Chevrolet Corvette sooner than that.
Stay tuned to CarShowroom as we bring you more updates as they come.
