Here’s how fast things change in the automotive industry…

As we write a new Infiniti G37 Coupe is sitting in the Car Showroom garage but news overnight from Infiniti HQ is the ‘G’ badge is gone.

From the 2014 model year, Infiniti is switching to ‘Q’ and ‘QX’ model names.

So the next generation of Infiniti models will have some tie-in to the brand’s original Q45 sedan.

The first example will be the all-new Infiniti Q50 premium sports sedan which will debut next month at the Detroit Auto Show.

Going forward, all Infiniti sedans and convertibles will be badged ‘Q’ while crossover and SUV models will be badged ‘QX’ (each followed by a model-specific double-digit number). So the replacement for the Infiniti we currently have might be the Q37.

“Over the past few months, we have talked at length with our retailers, our customers and our business partners about our brand. The need for a new identity and direction to promote consumer familiarity with our model range as we expand the portfolio became evident,” explained Infiniti’s global chief Johan de Nysschen.
