Mercedes-Benz has launched its third generation range of SLK Roadsters in Germany ahead if its local debut in the third quarter of 2011.
While the first SLK debuted the ‘vario-roof’ which allowed transformation from open-top roadster to fixed-roof coupe, the all-new lineup sees the premiere of the glass ‘panoramic vario roof’ with ‘MAGIC SKY CONTROL’ which switches from light to dark at the touch of a button.
The other major styling change is the upright grille – reminiscent of the 190 SL coupe from the 1950s and also the contemporary SLS AMG ‘gullwing’ sporty and the all-new CLS. Otherise the classi roadtsre dimensions of the SLK have not been changed and the all-new third generation delivers improved aerodyanmics – drag CD down to 0.36.
Inside is the expected latest version of Mercedes-Benz’ hallmark luxury and technology including another SLK standout – the neck-warming AIRSCARF system. Mercedes has also further developed its draught-stop system which is now called AIRGUIDE and consists of pivoting transparent plastic layers attached to the rear of the passenger compartment rollbars – driver or passenger can thus direct turbulent air.
The SLK has been launched in Europe with a choice of three engines – SLK200 BlueEFFICIENCY (135kW); SLK 250 BlueEFFICIENCY. Both these fuel-sippers are 1.8-lire engine and they drive through mercedes’ 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission.
And the third engine is the 3.5-litre V6.‘Benz says the V6 has been completely overhauled – now with direct injection and the SLK 350 BlueEFFICIENCY will deliver zero to 100km/h in just 5.6 seconds.
Underneath, SLK owners have the choice of three suspension systems – a conventional steel suspension; sports suspension (firmer springs and dampers; or there a ‘Dynamic Handling Package’ with electronic dampers, Direct-Steer and Torque Vectoring Brakes.
