More revolution than evolution.

2017 Mitsubishi e-Evolution Concept - Tokyo Motor Show

Mitsubishi certainly has quite a display prepared for the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show, with its headliner being the e-Evolution concept, reviving a well-loved name and putting it on the furthest thing imaginable from the last iteration to wear the evo-cative name (get it).

Claimed as a “new-generation high-performance all-electric crossover-SUV,” Mitsubishi seems intent on showcasing its EV knowledge and SUV prowess, while also giving its hyphen button a serious workout. This is then taken to “a new level” with the help of artificial intelligence, which the company claims will augment the skills of the driver to deliver a safe and exciting experience.

The car will be powered by three high-torque high-performance electric motors, supplied by a high-capacity battery system that will wear its electric badge with pride. A sole motor powers the front wheels while two motivate the rear, and is controlled electronically via a system dubbed ‘Active Yaw Control,’ which helps vector torque from one side to the other depending on the conditions. AYC is said to provide “crisp and nimble handling that mirrors the drivers’ intent” no matter the situation, and sounds pretty cool.

What’s also cool (but borders on creepy) is the AI program, which is apparently able to “transfer knowledge to the driver,” and claims to “unobtrusively enhance the driving expertise.” Imagine how your driving instructor used to tell you how to handle the car ahead of your test, but given a healthy dose of next-century tech. Apparently this AI ‘aid’ will provide “advice” through dialogue and visual displays, which in theory will drastically improve driver skills in a short amount of time, allowing for drivers to exert greater control over their vehicle and get the very best experience possible.
