Mercedes-Maybach Previews Mystery Coupe For Pebble Beach

Over their Twitter account, Mercedes-Benz chose to share a render of a long and swooping Mercedes-Maybach coupe that will be unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance that starts late next week - 21st August.

Maybach, for the uninitiated, is the ultra-luxury arm of Mercedes-Benz after Daimler acquired Maybach Motorenbau.

The picture itself of the mystery two-door was accompanied by the caption: Hot & cool – Almost 6 meters of ultimate luxury. That doesn’t really reveal much other than the fact that it will be a very long car - something we’ve come to expect from Maybach. By comparison, the standard-wheelbase version of the current Mercedes-Benz S-Class measures roughly 5.2-metres.

Right now, Maybach has its badge on just one vehicle - the Mercedes-Maybach S500 and S600, a long-wheelbase limousine based on the W222 S-Class but pitched as a rival to the Rolls-Royce Phantom and Bentley Mulsanne.

From a distance, the only current-day Maybach looks an awful lot like a regular S-Class. But with a possible bespoke coupe on the way, parent company Daimler may have some deeper plans for the marque to stand on its own with its own distinct brand and stable of vehicles.

Maybach has admitted that it has a shared commitment to zero emissions powertrains just like Mercedes-Benz. It is possible that the upcoming luxury coupe will premiere some kind of electric propulsion, eschewing the Benz-derived bi-turbo V12 petrols that it had become something of a trademark for the high-end marque after its assimilation into Daimler.

Some are already drawing parallels to the 2005 Exelero one-off that Maybach debuted at Pebble Beach in 2005, labelling this new coupe as a successor to that. We do hope they end up making more than one example this time.

We’ll have to wait until more information trickles out from Mercedes-Benz or when the covers are pulled off next weekend in California.
