AEB standard across the range.
In what’s being heralded as a “game-changer,” Mercedes-Benz’s new ute, the X-Class, has been awarded a full five-star safety rating by independent safety regulations body ANCAP for its impressive passive safety, as well as special mention for its active safety. The X-Class is the very first ute on sale to offer autonomous emergency braking, both at urban and inter-urban conditions, which is a huge leap forward for the ute segment.
“The light commercial vehicle segment has generally lagged behind passenger cars and SUVs with regard to safety specification, so the inclusion of AEB as standard across the X-Class range is to be commended. This is a game-changer for the ute market, and puts pressure on competing brands.” — James Goodwin, CEO, Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP)
The Mercedes-Benz X-Class scored well for adult occupant protection, while scoring only a fraction lower for child occupant protection. It was also mentioned that the AEB system in the X-Class performed really rather well, detecting risks and avoiding or mitigating collisions with vehicles, adult pedestrians, and minor pedestrians.
Along with the X-Class, Jaguar’s E-Pace, BMW’s X2, and Volkswagen’s Polo also received 5-star ANCAP ratings with the latest release, though it should be noted that the X2’s rating is based on the rating given to the BMW X1 on which it’s based, meaning that the car bears a 2015 timestamp for its credentials.
