This powerful adventurer is in concept form still, unfortunately…

Mercedes-Benz X-Class Makes Oz Landfall

Mercedes-Benz’s powerful adventurer concept ute, the X-Class, has made Australian landfall ahead of the luxury-ute’s official launch in 2018. The X-Class is set to create a whole new segment internationally, with the current crop of posh utility vehicles (like the Volkswagen Amarok V6 and Ford Ranger Wildtrak) set to be outdone by a specialist in posh.

The ‘Powerful Adventurer’ X-Class, the more rugged of the two X-Class concepts in existence, was brought to Australian shores for a little photographing, which Mercedes-Benz says would be used “for various promotional materials” when the X-Class eventually goes to launch. We see this as a sort of allusion that the production X-Class will not vary too far from what we’re seeing here. It’s unlikely that the ‘Powerful Adventurer’ model represents a production version too much though, as its massive wheels and almost 2-metre height would make it pretty… over-the-top.

The Australian and New Zealand markets have been described as “critical for the success of the X-Class,” according to Mercedes-Benz Vans managing director Diane Tarr. “The Concept has been flown in from Germany so our dealers can get a detailed briefing about the vehicle and continue their preparation for a successful launch of the X-Class in 2018.”

The X-Class has underpinnings shared with the Nissan NP300 Navara, and if you squint, you can see the resemblance. However, Mercedes-Benz is keen to point out that the X-Class (a name that it will carry into production) will be the first premium utility vehicle of its kind, and will offer buyers a unique experience that offers no compromise between luxury and usability.
