Mercedes-Benz is on the cusp of unveiling their all-new pick-up model based upon the Nissan NP300 Navara, being the second spin-off from that same foundation following the Renault Alaskan. Or at least, we thought they might have been.
The German automaker’s newest and most unusual offering has been spotted in camouflage prototype garb, driving in between Mercedes’ test facilities. That indicated a full launch wasn’t far off. However, in this new video, the GLT as it is purported to be named, is shown in the most detail we’ve seen so far.
Only, it appears that Benz will choose to let the world see a concept vehicle first, and that’s what will be unveiled on October 25th in, curiously, the Swedish capital of Stockholm. How much the production version will stay true to the sleek lines and decidedly un-pickup-like features shown on the concept is anyone’s guess.
But our guess would have to be that the final version will have to be more utilitarian and much less flashy. For example, the large and polished alloy wheels won’t really be much cop when tackling the rough stuff. Mercedes-Benz seems to be adamant about not sharing any distinguishable bodywork from the Nissan, though.
We find ‘LED High-Performance’ lamps up front, framed within a squinty pair of headlights that do well to project quite an aggressive fascia and curved bonnet. This is further helped by the large grille and large air intake just above its chin.
Mercedes-Benz will only be producing the upcoming pick-up as a double-cab, but ditches the 2.5-litre turbodiesel unit found in both the Navara and Alaskan, naturally. Instead, it will be powered by their own 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel that should be good for at least 185kW and over 600Nm of torque to split between all four of its wheels.
