Mercedes-Benz rocked the first media preview day at the Geneva Motor Show by unveiling the stunning, all-new A-Class sporty hatchback.
“A is for ‘Attack’: the A-Class is a clear statement of the new dynamism of the Mercedes-Benz brand,” revealed Mercedes-Benz Chairman Dr Dieter Zetsche. “It is completely new, down to the last detail. In automotive development, it’s not often you get the chance to start with a clean sheet of paper. Our engineers and designers have made the very most of that opportunity.”
In fact, for the first time, Mercedes’ performance specialist AMG has been involved from the start and the all-new A-Class lineup boasts two AMG models from the get-go – the A 250 Sport and A 220CDI Sport.
Petrol and diesel engines range in output from 81kW to 157kW. Petrol engines include 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre while the diesel lineup comprises 1.8-litre, 2.0-litre and 2.2-litre.
All feature fuel-saving auto start/stop and drive through either a six-speed manual transmission or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
Underneath, look for a new, sportier suspension configuration with a four-link rear end (suitable for later all-wheel-drive models),
Styling is a radical shift for Mercedes-Benz with the all-new A-class sitting a massive 18cms closer to the road than its predecessor and delivering a taut, muscular on-road presence highlighted by bold side character lines and standard rear spoiler. The all-new Mercedes-Benz A-Class is aerodynamic too – the drag Cd just 0.26.
Inside there are seats for five, an integrated smartphone application and typical Mercedes-Benz quality and detail – like the ‘sparkling jewel’ air-vents.
Measuring 4292mm in length, 1780mm in width and standing 1433mm high, the all-new A-Class takes the premium hatchback model in a totally new direction for ‘Benz – one that is no doubt sporty and stytlish. Mercedes will launch the newcomer in three model grades – ‘Urban’, ‘Style’ and ‘AMG Sport’.
The AMG models run 18-inch, five-spoke AMG alloy wheels and red highlights inside and out.
As expected, the all-new Mercedes-Benz runs the full suite of Mercedes-Benz safety and convenience features.
