100km per 5-minute charge. Awesome.

Spyshots are the sort of thing that publications like CarShowroom will get in emails from photographers, with sparse details and sometimes some helpful commentary (“it sounded loud, V8 likely” or things to that effect). However, in recent years carmakers have gone into the business of sending ‘spyshots’ of their disguised, camouflaged vehicles, along with helpful paragraphs of information on the impending model.

That’s exactly what Mercedes-Benz has done ahead of the arrival of its first-ever pure-electric production car, the EQC. Built off of the GLC-Class SUV, the EQC will be the production car to launch their fully-electric sub-brand ‘EQ,’ and it’ll pose quite a headache to Tesla’s Model X crossover and the Jaguar I-Pace, when it arrives next year.

Mercedes has dropped a bunch of details on the new SUV, confirming a lot of things we already know. The face of the EQC features a pair of sharp, ‘predatory’ headlights with distinctive LED daytime running lights, and we expect Multibeam LED adaptive beam technology to be featured here. You’ll also find prominent, built-in side steps down the, uh, sides.

The rear sees the use of broad, slim taillights, along with a very large rear diffuser. All in all, the EQC looks to keep to the design of the Generation EQ electric concept car, which was definitely a rather pretty looking thing.

Unfortunately, Mercedes-Benz didn’t detail the powertrain that lies beneath the skin of the EQC. However, considering that the design has remained rather faithful to the preceding concept, we can only imagine that it’ll have a similar 70kWh battery pack and about 300kW/700Nm on tap. The naught to 100km/h time should be sub-5.0 seconds, with about 500km of range per charge provided you’re not overly enthusiastic on the throttle.

If the 70kWh batteries are identical to the ones in the Generation EQ concept car, expect the EQC to offer charging from European Combined Charging System ports, with 300kW outputs capable of adding 100km of range per 5-minutes of charging.

Being Merc’s first full-electric vehicle, they’ve shown it no mercy in the past 4-years of development. According to them, some 200 prototypes and pre-production EQCs have been made and abused, ensuring the utmost quality from what will undoubtedly become a very, very important model for the brand. Launch is expected at the tail end of this year, so stay tuned to CarShowroom as we bring you more updates as they come.
