Mercedes-Benz Recalls 1 Million Cars Globally, Risk Of Fire

Daimler AG, parent company to Mercedes-Benz, has announced a massive global recall of its newer generation of vehicles for a potential fire risk due to a fuse issue following 51 reports of it occurring.

The German company does already have a fix in place for all Mercedes-Benz vehicles in question, a number roughly totalling 1 million units, which involves certain variants of W205 C-Class, W213 E-Class, X156 GLA-Class, X253 GLC-Class, and W176 CLA-Class.

The automaker did not yet specify the exact vehicles that may have this defect nor did it disclose which model year of vehicles are effected, though it is between the 2015 to 2017 model year . It did, however, report that of the incidences reported, there are no injuries or deaths that stem from this recall issue.

Of course, Mercedes-Benz has already moved to rectify this with all newly manufactured units and will ensure no vehicle in inventory will be sold before being fixed, a process than involves installing an additional fuse to handle the electrical load.

Daimler’s technical disclosure revealed that the issue stems from instances of a series failed starts causing the “current limiter” in the starter motor to overheat from repeated attempts to turn the engine.

Around 307,000 vehicles out of this 1 million total are located in the United States, though it is still tabulating the number of vehicles located in each other country, though it is likely the majority of other effected vehicles were sold in the European and Chinese market.

The rollout for a U.S-based recall campaign will begin in March.
