Mercedes-Benz unveiled the ‘Vision Tokyo’ in…well, Tokyo.
A five-seat vehicle capable of autonomous driving this is the next in a line of cars which includes the Vision Ener-G-Force from Los Angeles, AMG Vision Gran Turismo from Sunnyvale and G-Code from Beijing... or more particularly the F 015 Luxury In Motion autonomous luxury sedan.
Think of it as a five-seat lounge on wheels – perfect for a megacity like Tokyo with nine million people squeezed into a space smaller than Paris (population just over two million).
But of course the technology to do this is astonishing.
Everyone enters the fuel cell electric-powered Mercedes-Benz Vision Tokyo via a massive upward-swinging door on the left side and all five sit on a large ovals-shaped couch (there’s no front or rear seats as such) and with the vehicle driving autonomously they are free to chat and interact.
Maps, apps and other displays are presented as 3D holograms within the interior space.
And the windscreen has been replaced by a continuous stretch of glass paneling similar to a powerboat.
The electric hybrid system has a range of 980kms of which 190kms can be accomplished via battery power and 790kms via the electricity produced by the fuel cell.
