With the GLA compact SUV now on-sale globally, Mercedes-Benz is turning its attention to the other end of the SUV spectrum with the unveiling of the Concept Coupe SUV.

‘Sensual as a coupe – visionary as an SUV,” is how Benz’ design boss Gorden Wagener described the Concept Coupe SUV which measures-up at almost 5.0-metres in length, 3.0-metres in width, but stands just 1.75-metres in height.

That low height and elongated roofline (plus the massive 22-inch alloy wheels with 305/45 R22 tyres under flared wheelarches) combine to give the Mercedes-Benz Concept Coupe SUV is sporty ambience. But ‘Benz says the high-riding ground clearance hints at its prowess when the going gets tough.

Up-front there’s a short overhang and upright, single louvre version of the famous Mercedes-Benz grille (with ‘soft cube’ inserts) and a forward-sloping bonnet with the iconic Mercedes-Benz power domes.

Side view sees integrated SUV-style side sills (illuminated of course) and the indicator lights are a beautiful digital light band which lights-up sequentially from inside to outside.

At the rear, ‘Benz says the Concept Coupe SUV adopts slim lights and a rounded top section for the window – both akin to the all-new S-Class Coupe and destined to become staples for Mercedes-Benz coupes. Twin tailpipes emerge from a rear underbody guard – again a nod to the SUV capabilities.

Other elegant touches come in the form of recessed door handles and frameless side windows.

Interestingly, the paint colour is called ‘Alu-Beam’ and it is reminiscent of the famous Silver Arrows Mercedes-Benz racers from the 1930s and 1950s.

Power comes from Mercedes’ twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine delivering 245kW/480Nm and driving through the 9-G-tronic nine-speed automatic transmission and 4Matic all-wheel-drive.

We’re thinking this one isn’t far away from starting production.
