Mercedes-AMG has officially entered the newly heated super saloon game with a four-door version of their GT coupe. Incidentally, and to some raised eyebrows to being too on the nose, they’ve called it the AMG GT 4-Door despite being loosely based on the new CLS, which itself is a poshly styled E-Class as before.
Here in Edition 1 guise to kick things off, we have the double cream 63 S series treatment, replete with a fire breathing V8, all-wheel drive, big wheels, exclusive exterior paint, decals, and a very angry looking fixed rear wing. Mercedes-AMG will build this special edition for a year before the ending the run and leaving the sole ‘standard’ 63 S 4Matic+ and its ilk.
Surely you’ve noticed that rather aggressive exterior treatment, and that’s courtesy of the AMG Aerodynamics Package that comes as standard with the early access Edition 1. It’s rear diffuser can alter the amount of downforce generated depending on driving needs and the rear wing itself, though locked in place, can adjust its angle of attack for the same purpose.
All Edition 1s will come in a narrowed range of exterior colours and finishes. The one seen here is called Graphite Grey Magno, but buyers can also choose between Graphite Grey Metallic or Diamond White Bright Metallic.
And each will come with special AMG sports stripes, at least with this matte grey selection, as well as rather imposing 21-inch wheels. Edition 1 units will not be offered to any other variant of the AMG GT 4-Door besides the 63 S 4Matic+, which until the more powerful hybrid-assisted 73 series debuts, will be the model’s range topper.
Powering it is the venerable M178 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8, tuned in this case to produce 470kW and a whopping 900Nm, matching the AMG GT R Coupe. Despite being larger and heavier, the 4-Door is capable supercar levels of performance, needing just 3.1 seconds to reach 100km/h from a standstill and a top speed in excess of 310km/h.
The AMG GT 4-door 63 S 4Matic+ will roll out to customers later this year, starting in Europe. However, an Australian allocation has been confirmed and will follow shortly after.
