Mercedes-AMG GT S Roadster Arrives As 385kW Mid-Packer

Mercedes-AMG has added another variant into its two-door GT range, out this July, this time melding the powertrain, styling and equipment levels of the mid-range GT S, but this time without a hard top, essentially slotting in a gap that split the base GT Roadster and GT C Roadster.

As such, the new open-top from Affalterbach will be more powerful and generally quicker than the 350kW GT but not so much to worry the 410kW GT C. Neatly, its tune of the range-wide M178 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 produces 385kW and 670Nm to accommodate.

In numbers, this would mean a claimed 3.8-second century sprint time as well as top speed of roughly 307km/h. Like the rest of the GT range, drive is sent exclusively rearward through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Because it sits above the entry-level GT Roadster, the GT S arrives as standard with AMG’s sports exhaust system and an electronic limited slip differential. Aside from that, the ride is aided by a set of Ride Control adaptive dampers and its wheels are stepped at 20-inchers at the rear and a 19-inch pair up front.

It does miss out on the wider track of the GT C and GT R, however, but there is an optional four-wheel steer system borrowed from those faster siblings selectable as compensation. Ceramic brakes are also an optional extra on the GT S Roadster, as is the Dynamic Plus package that brings stiffer suspension, a quicker steering rack, and active engine mounts.

Separating this car from the rest of the AMG GT family can be tough, though, even with the standard inclusion of a Chrome package that adds high sheen finishes to air inlet grilles, front bumper, fender fins, and portions of the rear diffuser.

Inside, the AMG GT S Roadster’s cabin is decked out mostly in a suede-like Dinamica microfibre, including the seats and dash. Buyers can also specify this be changed to variety of other material choices, including Nappa leather.
