That rear three-quarter shot leaves little doubt which contender it’s training its sights on.
With the Geneva motor show just days away, Mercedes-AMG has taken the opportunity to tease its headline act once more ahead of its grand unveiling. The Mercedes-AMG GT Concept has long been confirmed to make a debut at this year’s show, and now we have a better idea of how it’ll shape up.
In this solitary rear three-quarter image, it’s clear to see that the GT Concept doesn’t stray too far from the existing design cues of the Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe & cabriolet. The way the sloping roofline meets the boot lid also brings to mind another big four-door luxury sports saloon, the Porsche Panamera. The GT Concept was, uh, conceptualised to bring the fight on to that very car, as Stuttgart isn’t all too pleased with leaving that particular segment unaddressed.
In videos circulating on the Internet, the GT Concept has been seen sporting ‘EQ Power’ badges, leading to speculation that the concept car (at least) will feature some form of electrification. The teaser videos have also showed off the GT Concept’s active aerodynamic technology, as well as the upright 15-slat AMG-badged grille up front. There’s also a snazzy sort-of triangular central exhaust at the back, though the likelihood of this making production is slim.
While Mercedes-AMG hasn’t gone as far as to say that the GT Concept (or GT4, as it’s rumoured to be called) will make production, though it’s unlikely that it won’t. Should it roll off a production line, the GT Concept will be built off of Mercedes-Benz’s MRA platform that currently underpins Stuttgart’s pedestrian offerings, rather than the unique platform utilised by the AMG GT & cabriolet. A production model should also gain AMG’s tried-and-tested 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, with a mild-hybrid system. A V6 option may debut eventually to help widen the range, but only after the speculated market launch in 2019.
