Mazda will have a special edition of their iconic MX-5 roadster debut at the upcoming 2016 Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK in late June. Aptly named the MX-5 Icon, it will be limited to 600 units and is the latest in a tradition of special ‘Icon’ editions.
Prior to this version which is based on the fourth-generation MX-5 (ND) in 97kW SE-L Nav spec, there was the third-generation 2007 MX-5 Icon (NC - 1,250 units), the second-generation MX-5 Icon (NB – 1,563 units) in 2005, and the first generation MX-5 Icon (NA, 750 units) in 2000.
As mentioned, the new MX-5 Icon will not gain the more powerful 2.0-litre SkyActiv-G engine but rather the base 1.5-litre four-cylinder. It will be offered in a choice of either Meteor Grey Mica or Crystal White Pearlescent paint finishes, both with contrasting Soul Red Metallic accents: wing mirrors, rear spoiler, side stripe decals, and front skirt.
The MX-5 Icon also gains unique 16-inch Gunmetal alloy wheels, black leather seats, rear parking sensors, automatic headlamps, and automatic rain-sensing wipers.
Mazda UK will be selling the new limited edition Icon for £20,995 or roughly $40,200 Australian and has also opened local pre-orders for their all-new MX-5 RF (Retractable Fastback) with deliveries on that expected to begin in 2017.
