Lexus LF-1 Limitless - Teasers

As the Detroit Motor Show, the first major exhibition of the 2018 automotive calendar, nears, so too will the frequency of teasers and hype generators from the various manufacturers aiming to show off their shiniest metal.

Lexus is making some early moves, showing the world little glimpses of what could be their next flagship crossover. For now, we know it as the LF-1 Limitless, a sleek concept vehicle that is perhaps more focused on the driving experience that we’ve come to expect from the premium Japanese marque. Think more Porsche Cayenne than Audi Q7.

Where before they had teased the car’s rear end, sporting a wraparound light bar and a funky orange exterior colour, this second one points shifts focus to the car’s front fascia - specifically what you’ll see come up behind you on a dark highway.

We don’t see evidence of the Lexus signature spindle grille, but we do clearly see some bold and quite aggressive front illuminators. The LED headlights are matched with amber/orange guide lamps that extend downward, with both creating a distinct 3D effect.

They look very futuristic indeed, and this being Lexus, we expect that to be just the start of the forward-facing features that will feature on this LF-1 Limitless. Whether those might make it to the production phase is an entirely different matter, but expect to the an advanced hybrid powertrain and innovative autonomous technology to headline the Detroit-bound concept.

Because this might well be Lexus’ first real stab at the performance SUV, we might see a properly sporty interior that’s made the right concessions to still keep its credentials as a semi-practical and versatile crossover.

From what we’ve seen most recently with the all-new LS saloon and LC coupe, Lexus’ latest styling philosophy should play well the needs of a crossover, lending more than the necessary level of visual dynamism to compete in this space.
