At the previous Paris Motor Show in 2016, Lexus brought along a very angular SUV-shaped concept to show off. Called the UX, there was some speak about it being fast tracked as a future production model, but the Japanese premium automaker declined to provide more info.
Now, though, patent documents seem to show that this UX concept might spawn a totally new entry in the Lexus line-up, as reported by Autocar UK. It could be positioned as an entry-level crossover below the NX to which some thought this concept might be replacing down the road.
Its eventual introduction will coincide more or less with the bowing out of the current CT hatch, perhaps even using a similar powertrain and perhaps even sporting similar cabin. Though, despite its lower rank, it’s suspected to be able to carry a maximum of 7 passengers.
Naturally, the UX that will roll off the production line in Lexus’ Fukuoka plant won’t be as crazily stylised as the version shown in Paris. Rather, the angularity that’s become a design staple of Lexus will remain, as will that hexagonal spindle grille, but built into a more subdued basic shape.
Seeing as how this will be the entry model in Lexus’ expanded SUV/crossover portfolio, it might be facing competition from the BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and even the Range Rover Evoque 5-door - though those three do not feature more than 5 seats.
As typical with Lexus, powertrain options for the upcoming UX crossover will not include diesels but a combination of petrol engines with or without a hybrid system, mated to a 6-speed torque converter automatic or CVT.
