Proof is in the pudding, but it seems needlessly complicated…
Lexus has detailed today the hybrid system that’ll go into its new LS500h flagship, which will make its debut at the upcoming Geneva motorshow. Called the ‘Multi Stage Hybrid,’ the new system that Lexus has developed aims to provide all the benefits of a hybrid powertrain, without the typical gripes that come with them. The LS500h is the second variant of the new LS lineup, which broke cover in Detroit last month with the V6-only LS500.
Power in the LS500h will come from a 3.5-litre V6 up front, good for 220kW of power and 348Nm of torque, supplemented by an electric motor. The latter gets its power from a lithium-ion battery pack that boasts a 20% reduction in physical size and 20kg lighter weight than the nickel-metal hydride batteries that were packed into the outgoing LS600h.
One of the biggest issues with most hybrid vehicles, Lexus included, is that they usually come bundled with a continuously-variable (CVT) gearbox. These steeples transmissions are able to keep petrol and electric engines working harmoniously, but in a luxury car, they create a less natural driving sensation, detracting from the overall experience behind the wheel. As such, the Multi Stage Hybrid system sticks to the CVT transmission but pairs it with a 4-speed automatic gearbox as well. The ‘dual’ transmission system implemented here is designed not only to provide the more natural sensation of a conventional 10-speed automatic, but it allows seamless integration of the electric motor’s torque capabilities.
We’ll try and explain this as best we can: There are three ‘simulated’ gear ratios from the CVT gearbox, which are sandwiched between three physical ratios (of four) in the automatic gearbox, which effectively provides nine ratios. The fourth physical ratio of the conventional automatic gearbox acts as an ‘overdrive’ of sorts, which completes 10 gears. Yes, it’s complicated, but Lexus promises a “linear, direct, and continuous application feel, making for a more rewarding driving experience.”
Stay tuned to CarShowroom, as we will bring you further details on the Lexus LS500h when it makes its debut at the Geneva motor show next month.
