We know the updated Mustang has been outed, but the full story hasn’t yet been told on Ford’s most successful pony car generation yet, though we already know the major plot points pertaining to the facelift.
Through a leaked brochure obtained by the watchful Mustang6G forum, however, we can now begin to fill in the remaining question marks. Aside from the visual tweaks, no matter what you make of them, the 2018 Mustang will bring with it new tech, engine enhancements, and the addition of a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Starting with that new gearbox, it’s one that’s shared with the Chevrolet Camaro as part of a development joint venture between the Blue Oval and General Motors. Over the older 6-speed auto, it delivers quicker shifts, more intelligent shift logic, and improved fuel economy mostly thanks to a broader set of cogs to run through.
Over the current 6th-generation Mustang, the newer car will feature selectable drive modes that work with dynamic Magnaride dampers to alter the demeanour of the car, firming or relaxing the ride depending on which is selected. This works in tandem with more traditional improvements made to its suspension such as improved new stabiliser bars, cross-axis joints, shock absorbers, and revised steering calibration.
Sticking with technology, a 12-inch digital instrument cluster replaces the analogue dials available right now, similar to what Ford showed off in their GT supercar. There’s also full-LED front illumination and more robust set of standard pre-collision safety features following a disappointing Euro NCAP score.
The two main engines that power the Mustang remain broadly similar, but improved nonetheless. Extra power should be on the cards from both the 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder and the 5.0-litre Coyote V8, though specifics weren’t among specs that were leaked (it’s listed as ‘TBD’ for now).
More details including confirmed specifications should be revealed as the year rolls on, including a predicted appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show before production begins, earmarked to be shortly after that, followed by a worldwide launch rollout.
