Rally driver Bruce Garland has tamed his right foot to squeeze 5.49l/100kms from an Isuzu D-MAX ute and drive 3,425 kms from Melbourne to Cairns using under 2.5 tanks of diesel fuel.
And to maximize the real-world nature of the trip, garland and his Isuzu D-MAX crew ute carried driver, co-driver Harry Suzuki and 260kgs of camping gear.
And the fuel-sipping Isuzu D-MAX didn’t just cruise along the highways on the trip north – along the way Garland visited some 20 provincial towns, stooping at Isuzu dealerships, fishing locations and retail stores.
The trip was overseen by representatives of the NRMA, RACQ and RACV who supervised re-fuelling and sealed the tank.
