Ford, those cheeky little scamps, stealthily parking what appears to be a yet-to-be-announced Mustang Boss 302 into their press photos of the newly unveiled 2018 Mustang.
The eagle-eyed folks at CarAdvice spotted the car sitting pretty in the background in a photograph showing off the new Mustang’s dashboard. It’s not quite in focus, and with just enough hidden for its more distinguishing features to remain relatively ambiguous.
What wasn’t ambiguous, though, is the Boss 302’s unique decal that runs down the side to set it apart from the common-or-garden Ford pony car.
The nameplate was last used in the 5th-generation Mustang in 2012, returning to the 302 cubic inch displacement (which translates to 5.0-litres everywhere else). It produced 331kW and 515Nm at the time.
The Boss 302’s formula of a highly strung naturally aspirated V8 powering a more performance-focused Mustang was brought back with the current GT350 and GT350R, and should Ford be planning a successor to that 2012 car, perhaps it needs to fill some different shoes.
What we might be in for is a supercharged 5.0-litre engine generating beyond 447kW in a car that’s more of a direct successor to the older Shelby GT500, sitting at the top sixth-generation Mustang’s range.
