Infiniti’s Got An Electric Performance Concept For Pebble Beach

Left-field luxury marque Infiniti appears to be preparing a sequel to its sensational Prototype 9 electric performance car that we saw last year, and if that concept car was any indication of just what Infiniti can do when it puts its best talent on the job, this upcoming car should be jaw-dropping. We don’t know what it’s called and, annoyingly, the brand released the teaser of the upcoming car with really vague statements about the thinking behind it.

“Our new concept provides clues to where the Infiniti brand is heading.” — Karim Habib, Executive Design Director, INFINITI Cars

The Prototype 9 that was unveiled last year was an electric single-seat racer that was inspired by the open-wheel grand prix race cars of the 1940s, and the new concept is set to follow that theme. It’s an open-top, electric performance car, though there’s reason to believe there may be room for a passenger. Further, the design language displayed clearly shows that this won’t be looking to yesterday for inspiration: This is all about tomorrow.

“For us, electrification means performance: Our electrified cars will be powerful, efficient, and a joy to drive. And the new concept is a physical representation of our electrified performance future.” — Karim Habib, Executive Design Director, INFINITI Cars

What’s interesting is that the announcement of the electrified performance concept, that will be revealed in full at the upcoming Pebble Beach concours event later this month, is the first project to come to fruition under Karim Habib, with cooperation from his design teams based in the US, the UK, and Japan. It’ll be interesting to see how the various different schools and ideas about aesthetics and luxury come together in this concept, and then kind of guess which bits and bobs from it will eventually trickle down into the production fleet.
