Hyundai will be taking the covers off a new concept vehicle called the RN30 at the 2016 Paris Motor Show which is just a few days away at this point. It’s obviously a performance car as evidenced by the exterior styling and could possibly blossom into the first true showroom product from their new ’N’ division.
The latter half of its name bears the ’30’ designation, too, and shouldn’t come across to anyone as a surprise to learn that it is based upon the upcoming third-generation i30 hatch. This bodes well for those keen to see what the Golf GTI-rivalling i30N will be like.
Its certainly is purposeful with its wide gaping grille, lowered body, huge wheels, and bulging wheel arches. Perhaps due to the fact that this RN30 is a far more extreme interpretation of a hot hatch, Hyundai could position it above the i30N and pit it against cars like the Ford Focus RS and Honda Civic Type R.
The naming scheme that the Korean marque is also interesting as previous performance concepts also had a similar moniker. The most recent being the RM16 and RM15, both of which were based on the Veloster.
There’s not a lot of information confirmed about Hyundai’s i30-based hot hatch. The clearest look yet would be the video of it tackling a winding mountain road. Under the bonnet, we expect to find a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with an expected output in the region of 180kW.
We’ll find out more about the RN30 when it makes its full debut imminently at the Paris Motor Show.
