Haval's flagship H9 falls just shy of the coveted 5-star safety rating from ANCAP.

Not quite the full 5-star rating Haval was presumably hoping for, their H9 large SUV was given 4-stars (applicable to all variants) after ANCAP ran it through their gauntlet of crash tests.

The H9 garnered a total score of 30.65 point out of a possible 37, with a 12.05 (out of a full 16) points in the Frontal Offset crash test but an impressive 16 out of 16 for the side impact test. ANCAP said the manufacturer did not decide to proceed with the Pole Test after the frontal offset test was conducted.

The Chinese luxury SUV scored ‘Good’ in Whiplash Protection and an ‘Acceptable’ in Pedestrian Protection. Of the overall safety performance as tested by ANCAP, Haval was surprised that the H9 did not take home a higher score.

Mr James Goodwin, ANCAP’s CEO, said: “The H9 is being marketed as a premium offering from China’s highest selling SUV brand and we would expect a vehicle in this price range to offer a greater range of advanced safety features and improved crash performance,”

“The Large SUV category is extremely competitive and there are now 5 star options from almost all brands at varying price points. It’s hoped this process draws new entrants’ attention to the importance of safety and a 5 star rating in Australia.”

The H9, Haval’s flagship SUV offering, comes equipped with curtain airbags for all three rows of seats, driver fatigue detection and reverse collision avoidance sensors. However, it does lack autonomous emergency braking and lane support system which could have pushed it into the 5-star score bracket if fitted.
