Mazda Australia has now announced pricing for the folding hardtop variant of their popular MX-5 roadster. Called the RF, or Retractable Fastback, the much awaited Japanese convertible will be available locally in February 2017 with a starting price of $38,550 (plus on-road costs).
Once it does reach showrooms here, buyers will choose from just two model grades: RF and the higher-end RF GT which begins at $43,890. And unlike the soft-top MX-5, drive will be sent to the rear wheels via just one engine option, a 2.0-litre SkyActiv-G naturally aspirated petrol four-cylinder that generates 118kW and 200Nm.
Because, of the RF’s inherent price premium over the standard MX-5 as necessitated by its positioning and added mechanicals pertaining to its folding metal roof, Mazda Australia saw no to reason to include the less powerful 1.5-litre unit.
Buyers will also be able to choose to manage shifting duties themselves through a six-speed manual or to hand it to a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters. Standard specifications are already generous with the base RF, offering a 4.6-inch TFT colour display within the instrument binnacle, adaptive LED headlights, as well as a leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear-lever.
In addition to that, the RF GT gains luxuries such as a nine-speaker BOSE audio system, heated seats, and LED tail lights. A black roof finish can also be optioned for the higher-end GT as can Nappa leather upholstery, further adding to the MX-5’s price ceiling.
