Ford has announced a newer and more capable F-150 Raptor for 2019, made so by a laundry list of small and not-so-small updates for the company’s signature performance pickup. As you might’ve been able to tell from these pictures, picking apart any exterior changes is quite challenging.

Rather, Ford has focused on giving the Raptor some new hardware to make it better at what it was developed to excel at: high speed desert roving. To that end, a set of electronically controlled shock absorbers by FOX Racing have been added, enhancing its already proven internal bypass shocks.

Developed specifically for the F-150 Raptor with FOX, Ford Performance says that the new setup is more effective at maximising comfort and resistance to bottoming out under high stress, using adaptive Live Valve technology to vary compression rates and make the most of its suspension travel (13-inches at the front and 13.9-inches at the rear).

These new suspension components work in tandem with the Raptor’s Terrain Management System   for improved high speed off-roading, detecting when the truck is airborne and predicting the best way to handle the impending ground impact without losing control and grip.

However, in conditions that require a defter touch, Ford says its new Trail Control system can automatically draw significant engine torque to overcome steep obstacles, it can individually brake the wheels so the truck comes down smoothly on the other side. Useful for scaling rocky, even slippery hill climbs.

Ford hasn’t messed with the powertrain combination this time around, meaning power remains sourced from a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 petrol that produces 340kW and 690Nm and mated to a 10-speed R80 series automatic transmission.

Inside, though, the Raptor has been given a new set of Recaro sport seats, available with blue Alcantara inserts and design touches inspired by the Ford GT supercar.

“Raptor’s success is rooted in its incredible suspension, superb vehicle control and the confidence the truck instills in its owners,” said Hermann Salenbauch, global director, Ford Performance vehicle programs. “Upgrades to the 2019 F-150 Raptor have improved all three to new levels that the competition will have to benchmark – again.”
