This year’s SEMA show in Las Vegas was also a venue to which Ford chose to debut its newest creation, a new track-ready turnkey Mustang racer called the GT4.

It’s immediately apparent that the car isn’t suited in the least to be a daily sports coupe. Inspired by the Ford Shelby GT350R-C that won the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge championship recently, the GT4 is a joint project of both Ford Performance and Multimatic Motorsports.

The Canadian automotive outfit has also collaborated with the Blue Oval on the 2017 Ford GT, surely lavishing this track-ready Mustang with some winning ingredients as well. And it needs it, as Ford plans to enter the GT4 European Series global championship.

Under the bonnet lives a high-revving flat-plane crank 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V8, which it shares with the GT350R, mated to a six-speed Holinger paddle-shift transmission. In addition, the car has undergone a significant weight shedding programme, with regulation-spec equipment such as an FIA-compliant roll cage, racing seats, fire extinguisher, and motorsports engine controller.

Ford says the Mustang GT4 is ready to enter any GT4 series race in the world such as the Pirelli World Challenge GTS and European GT4.

In addition to the weight reduction and powertrain, Ford Performance features a series of chassis modifications from Multimatic Motorsports including dampers, lower rear control arms and stabiliser bars.

Forgeline 18- by 11-inch wheels with racing slicks put the power to the pavement while stopping power is provided by six-piston callipers and rotors from Brembo. Aerodynamic aids are applied to improve downforce, including a rear wing, aggressive splitter, additional hood venting and new rear diffuser.

Aerodynamically, Ford and Multimatic has taken their shared knowledge from the 2017 GT road car project and racing programme, channelling it into the Mustang GT4. These result in aggressive front splitter, hood vents, added air sills, large diffuser, and fixed rear wing.
