It’s been a long time coming, but Ford confirmed it was working on a new flagship Mustang, one that would be the company’s most powerful road car. First announced at this year’s Detroit Motor Show and teasing its gaping maw up front, the Blue Oval is now showing the car off from another angle.

The new GT500, based on the company’s facelifted 6th-generation pony car, is due to receive its full premiere at next year’s Detroit Motor Show before being made available in the subsequent months, although a worldwide reveal could take place online to precede that.

Despite looking like an aerial shot, the barely visible artists’ signature just to the left of the left wheel confirms that this is a highly detailed rendering. So, for all intents and purposes, this is what the 2020 Mustang GT500 should look like from the top.

While it doesn’t really give much insight into how the car will stack up against the rivals it will inevitably face upon launch, the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE, it does look plenty mean. Ford has already confirmed it’s supercharged V8 will develop over 522kW, and any way you scratch it, that alone means it will be one real brute regardless how resolved Ford Performance manages to make the chassis.

The blue car unit seen here wears the requite double white stripes, a much more prominent haunches, wider track, and tyre humps. It’s hood, much like recent Corvette ZR1, has a cascade of vents to help cool the monster V8 and its fixed wing is very obviously made of carbon fibre - as are plenty of the rest of the car’s body panels, we imagine.

Ostensibly, Ford will let buyers choose between a manual transmission and their wunderkind 10-speed automatic, and there have been rumours that it will feature the most advanced suspension technology ever on the Mustang, even borrowing some go-fast tech from the Ford GT.

It’s not clear if the company is planning to release many more teasers in the near future, especially given that the actual car’s earmarked debut is quite a ways away.
