Pulses quickened amongst Ford Mustang fans worldwide when news came from the Detroit Auto Show on the Shelby Mustang GT350R.

Ford promises the track-ready Shelby Mustang GT350R will deliver in excess of 373kW/542Nm making its 5.2-litre masterpiece the most powerful naturally-aspirated yet from the ‘Blue Oval’ team.

Inspired by the lightweight Shelby GT350 Competition Model, the GT350R sits lower than standard and runs unique calibration for springs, electronically-adjustable dampers, anti-roll bars, wheel alignment and bump-stops.

Reflecting its specialist nature (and again a throwback to the halcyon days of Trans-Am racing), inside the Shelby Mustang GT350R dispenses with useless weighty items like the rear seat, air-conditioning, audio system, boot trim and reversing camera – there’s 60kgs gone in a flash!

But sporty, lightweight ‘R’ seats include opening for racing harnesses.

Aero gets attention with external changes including a rear diffuser and bootlid wings, vents for the wheel wells, lightweight alloy wheels and even a bonnet air vent shaped to reduce lift.

File this one under ‘A’ for awesome, expect this car to be the base vehicle for Ford’s V8 Supercar racing program post-2016 and write to Ford Australia to get some shipped here!
