A couple of days ago we said that Ford is in the middle of prepping an even faster, more powerful, bone-rattling version of its Mustang to combat the frankly crazy amount of performance and power that Dodge and Chevrolet are extracting from their muscle car contenders.
For example, the Camaro ZL1 will have over 485kW in either a hard top or convertible form while the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat generates 527kW from their respective supercharged V8s. Meanwhile, Ford’s most extreme current-generation Mustang, the Shelby GT350R, produces 392kW from its rather glorious naturally aspirated high-revving 5.2-litre V8. That amount of power, we admit, is nothing to sneeze at, but in the muscle car power wars, Ford doesn’t like to lose face.
The previous Mustang generation had something up its sleeve: the GT500. It had a 5.8-litre supercharged V8 capable of around 500kW. And that’s a formula that Ford wants to bring back for this new sixth-gen ‘Stang.
The confirmed details remain scarce but a video has emerged that shows a prototype Mustang roaming around Dearborn, Michigan that has a curious amount of camouflage only covering the car’s front end, suggesting that the bigger intakes and a generally more sinister looking nose is hiding beneath, implying a more powerful variant is on the way.
There are some who say that Ford may also choose to resurrect the Mach 1 name for this new flagship Mustang, which would make more sense that the current numerical designation it’s using. Either way, the upcoming car will likely match or surpass the Challenger Hellcat’s high power figure but by what means is the the more interesting question.
From the way the car sounds in the video, we suspect that fans will be very pleased with the resulting car when Ford unveils it - supposedly some time next year.
