Toward the latter half of 2016, Ford confirmed that it will be bring introducing a new SUV into their Australian line-up to replace the locally-developed Territory. The second-generation Edge was tapped to carry on the flame, a model primarily sold in North America and in select European markets.

The car was due to arrive in Australia as a 2018 model, but its local arrival has encountered some resistance from Toyota, who have rights to that name’s trademark here - though we’re not all to sure for what purpose (besides the HiLux Edge Special Edition variant sold in New Zealand).

CarAdvice revealed that the Japanese automaker has officially renewed its dibs on that name, requiring the Blue Oval to choose a new moniker for the incoming SUV and throwing yet more confusion at their ‘One Ford’ vision.

While their passenger car nomenclature is loosely based on beginning with the letter ‘F’ and their SUVs with the letter ‘E’, Ford has chosen to rename the Edge as the Endura when it arrives, recently registering it with the Australian trademark office.

In the near future, Ford Australia’s SUV portfolio will comprise of the EcoSport, Escape, Endura, and Everest. While a comprehensive specification list will only be revealed closer to launch, it’s speculated that the incoming Endura will be offered in a seven-seater configuration and powered by a 2.0-litre Duratorq four-cylinder turbodiesel, at least initially.
