It was just a matter of time until Ford revealed the roofless version of their newly updated Mustang for 2018 to accompany the fastback variant that broke cover just days ago at the Detroit Motor Show.
Like the hard top, the convertible wears all the same visual tweaks that are mainly focused on the car’s fascia. There are new LED headlamps that live inside reshaped housing, a pair of wider and narrower grilles, and more integrated daytime running lights.
Rather than being change for the sake of change, Ford maintains that these do result in aerodynamic gains, increasing high speed stability and improving fuel economy.
At the rear, the changes are more difficult to discern, relegated to a different logo style for the EcoBoost’s galloping horse or V8’s GT emblem. Speaking of which, both engines also receive some minor but welcome improvements.
The 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder can now access its overboost function during hard acceleration automatically while the 5.0-litre naturally-aspirated V8 pulls better at higher revs thanks to a new fuel injection system.
Both are now paired to a new 10-speed automatic transmission that offers quicker shift times, smoother operation, and more fuel efficiency.
Inside, the Mustang’s driving experience is dominated by the 12-inch digital instrument cluster which can be customised based on driving needs between prioritising performance-related information, to navigation to media. The centrally-mounted infotainment system with SYNC3 remains, supplementing the new digital dash.
Finally, Ford now includes the MagnaRide electronically adjustable suspension as an option for all Mustangs as well as active exhaust valve control for when you’re feeling especially loud and brash.
