The sixth-generation Ford Mustang is still a fairly fresh model (mid-2014 debut production start) with its muscle car novelty not at all fading from the imaginations of its buyers, both current and potential.
But the American automaker is already hard at work on a spruce up that should premiere late next year as a 2018 model, which, in addition to the smaller visual and mechanical tweaks will also include a new 10-speed automatic transmission option, according to sources in contact with Autocar UK.
Currently, automatic versions of the Mustang are catered by a six-speed torque converter transmission, and the all-new 10-speeder will be the same shifter fitted to the latest Chevrolet Camaro as its development was a collaboration between GM and Ford.
There’s no confirmation whether or not this transmission will be made available worldwide, although it seems to be locked-in for models sold in the United States. Should this new automatic make its way Down Under, it won’t be alone in using a cross-marque transmission as the facelifted Ford Focus ditched its dual-clutch unit for a SelectShift 6F35, also co-developed with GM.
Another unknown is whether this new transmission will be fitted to just one engine choice or both the 2.3-litre EcoBoost or atmospherical 5.0-litre V8. Chevrolet fits the new box exclusively (for now) to the range-topping Camaro ZL1, and it’s likely Ford could follow a similar pairing, reserving it for the larger engines.
That being said, power outputs could rise for both engine choices in the standard configuration for Mustang fastbacks and convertibles. Alterations to the car’s exterior are all but confirmed with spy pictures emerging heavily camouflaged with panels to cover up the new bits. A lot of emphasis has been place on keeping the front end hidden, hinting that a revision to the grille, headlamps, and bumper design are on the cards.
Furthermore, a source told the UK publication that Ford plans to show off the facelifted ‘Stang at either the next Detroit Motor Show in January 2017 or sooner at the Los Angeles Motor Show in November 2016.
