Outcry to protect ‘Mach 1’ moniker led to the decision.
American carmaker Ford have heeded the objections from its fans, who cried foul when the company decided that its new Mustang-based electric crossover ought to be called the ‘Mach 1.’ The name is a hallowed one to Mustang fans, saved for only some of the most special iterations of the Mustang in history.
So to ensure that Mustang sales aren’t hampered and fans remain loyal, they’ve canned the idea of calling the Mustang-SUV-crossover-whatever the Mach 1. Instead, according to trademark filings in the States, they’re going to call it the ‘Mach-E.’
The new model has been teased in videos before, showing off a face that bears more than a passing resemblance to the Mustang sports car. However, the glowing pony badge on the nose was more than enough for audiences to understand that it was not going to feature either the 2.3-litre EcoBoost or indeed the 5.0-litre V8.
It was US publication The Drive that stumbled on the trademark filing first, and they’ve since gotten in touch with Ford to clarify. However, Ford only went as far to say that “trademark applications are intended to protect new ideas, but aren’t necessarily an indication of new business or product plans.”
Sure thing, Ford.
