Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Australia has issued a recall for nearly all examples of the Jeep Cherokee sold locally in 2014 and 2015 as well as 2015 Jeep Renegades to rectify a faulty wiring harness that, should it fail, will cause a software glitch that could lead to an engine shut down.
According to the official fault description, the “transaxle wiring harness may have been built with insufficient wire terminal crimp(s), causing an intermittent high electrical resistance in the transaxle wire harness circuit(s),”
“A high resistance circuit(s) in this wiring harness will cause on-board diagnostic system to set a Diagnostic Trouble Code.”
This is the same fault that we first saw reported in the United States, concerning the same components and would lead to the same safety issue of a possible loss of motive power for the affected vehicles.
While the North American recall affected over 320,000 vehicles, the number of Cherokees in Australia is but a fraction of that and involves 7201 units. As of now, no injuries or deaths have been found to have stemmed from this problem.
FCA Australia say that they will be notifying vehicle owners who can then bring them to a Chrysler Jeep Dodge service centre where an inspection of the transaxle wiring harness would be carried out and repaired if necessary at no cost.
Should any owners have any questions or concerns, they can contact FCA at 1300 133 079.
