FCA Recalls Over 320k Jeep Cherokees, Renegades For Electrical Fault

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Group (FCA) has issued a voluntary recall for their Jeep Cherokees built between 2012 and 2015 as well as Jeep Renegades built after September 2014 due to a possible fault surrounding the car’s wiring and software.

Over 320,000 vehicles are involved in this recall, with most of the units located within the NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) territory, with only a small portion of the total global figure sold elsewhere. So far there has been confirmed units eligible for the recall in the UK while it is not yet known if Australian cars are effected.

Reportedly, the vehicles with the fault could, over time, develop compressed or contorted wiring that would induce a software glitch that could lead to a sudden loss of power and a subsequent accident.

So far no injuries or deaths have been found to have stemmed from this problem. Despite this being a voluntary recall, we as always recommend that owners err on the side of safety rather than risk a potential and preventable incident.

We do not yet know when FCA will begin contacting owners about the fault and educating them about the necessary steps to rectify the issue, what those steps are, or how long the repairs will take. However, we will follow this up with more news as it arrives.

In the meantime, FCA says that owners who do experience this problem (sudden loss of power) involving some potentially faulty vehicle electrics can temporarily resolve it by restarting the vehicle.
