Subaru’s camera-based ‘EyeSightTM’ safety technology will make its international debut when fitted to some Liberty and Outback models sold in Australia later this year.
The system is currently exclusive to Japanese Subaru buyers – fitted to more than 50 per cent of Liberty models sold.
Subaru EyeSightTM uses compact cameras mounted in a compact unit near the rear vision mirror to identify and alert the driver of road hazards. Subaru says the technology actively avoids frontal collisions, lane drifting and low-speed impacts.
It also recognizes pedestrians and two-wheeled motorists, and - when used with adaptive cruise control – ‘locks onto’ vehicles directly in front, automatically slowing/accelerating and even stopping to maintain a safe distance.
The new technology also features ‘Pre-Crash Braking’ which, if the driver fails to apply the brakes, automatically slows the car when it detects the vehicle ahead is slowing or stopping. This reduces accident damage and EyeSightTM will bring the vehicle to a compete halt at speeds less than 30km/h (many ‘tail-enders’ happen at low speeds in city/urban environments where the driver is distracted).
Subaru has been testing the system in local conditions for some time and we will be the first overseas market to introduce this proven safety technology.
