2010 saw Mercedes-Benz set a new global recode for sales and the German giant is not resting on its laurels, wheeling-out the best of both worlds at the Detroit Auto Show – the new high performance SL roadster and two hybrid versions of the E-Class ( one diesel and one petrol).

The new Mercedes-Benz SL roadster uses significantly more aluminium in its construction than its predecessor which pares some 140kgs for extra agility. And the new BlueDIRECT engines are up to 29 per cent more fuel-efficient than the previous model.

Looks maintain the classis Mercedes SL proportions but there are nice details like the air vents with chrome fins and altogether aerodynamics are enhanced (drag CD now down to 0.27 for the SL 350).

Mercedes-Benz Australia will launch the new SL locally later this year.

But the big focus in Detroit was the hybrid versions of the superb Mercedes-Benz E-Class – the E 300 BlueTEC Hybrid diesel and E 400 Hybrid petrol.

‘Benz’ says the E 300 BlueTEC Hybrid is the world’s most fuel-efficient full-size sedan and wagon. The four-cylinder diesel engine delivers 150kW/500Nm (20kW/250Nm from the electric motor) and returns fuel consumption as low as 4.2l/100kms.

The V6 petrol Mercedes-Benz E 400 Hybrid is good for 225kW/370Nm (plus 20kW/250Nm from the electric motor) and is rated at 8.7l/100kms for combined cycle fuel consumption.

Mercedes says the E 300 BlueTEC Hybrid is heading initially to markets in Europe while the petrol E 400 Hybrid will appear first in North America followed by Japan and China.
