Mercedes-Benz ushers in a new era of supercars with the launch of the SL 63 AMG. With the optional AMG Performance Package, the twin-turbocharged 5.5-litre V8 roadster delivers 415kW of power and 900Nm of torque – yes, that’s right 900Nm from a series production car - to comfortably out-muscle all rivals.
Even in standard specification, the Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG Roadster delivers 395kW at 5500rpm and 800Nm from 2000-4500rpm.
Drive is via the AMG Speedshift MCT seven-speed transmission - the SL 63 AMG accelerates from zero to 100km/h in 4.3 or 4.2 seconds and can hit 200km/h in under 13 seconds. Despite this phenomenal performance, the latest Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG is 30 per cent more fuel efficient than its predecessor – rated at 9.9l/100kms.
The all-new looks have a clear lineage to the SLS AMG as does the bodyshell. Lots of aluminium - even magnesium in places you can’t see - and carbon-fibre/plastic for the bootlid sees weight is down by 125kgs to 1845kgs.
Underneath are a four-link front suspension and multi-link rear featuring multiple aluminium components, AMG sports tuning and Active Body Control. Wheels are 19-inch twin-spoke AMG alloys for the standard SL 63 AMG (Performance Package gains 20-inch rears).
For the roof, you can choose from a painted version, glass roof or Mercedes-Benz’ panoramic vario-roof with transparency adjustable via a switch.
