Brabus, famed German tuner known for its creations once known as a Mercedes-Benzes, has been fettling with the Mercedes-AMG S63 Cabriolet to create this: the 850 6.0 Biturbo Cabrio.
If Mercedes-Benz, no stranger to big power, should come out with a car that has modest to very impressive levels of performance – and particularly if they’re also comfortable – then Brabus would likely want to get their itchy paws onto it. What for? To turn it evil, of course.
The base car already had with it 430kW from its 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine that was good enough to propel the open-top cruiser to 100km/h from rest in 4.1 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h.
But Brabus, as usual, decided that that was far less power than could be extracted from the mill and crucially wasn’t near enough to where it wanted it to be. Consequently, the 850 Cabrio now has a 6.0-litre V8 engine, bored out to lift displacement, fitted pair of new turbochargers, exhaust system, intakes, connecting rods, forged pistons, and crankshaft. Not much is left from the Benz donor car.
The result is 625kW and an astonishing 1,450Nm of peak torque, which they then had to limit to 1,150Nm in the interest of having the engine and transmission survive. Luckily, Brabus has kept the 4MATIC four-wheel drive system, which should help shuffle all that power somewhat by recruiting the front wheels.
Brabus say that the project was conceived to make the 850 Biturbo Cabrio the world’s fastest and most powerful four-seat cabriolet. The car reaches 100km/h in just 3.5 seconds and goes past 200km/h in 9.4 seconds. The actual top speed is unknown, as tyre limitations have meant it is capped at 350km/h.
Of course, all this added power does come with necessary upgrades to the aerodynamics, wheels, and brakes. On that first front, Brabus has made a new carbon fibre front spoiler, side surrounds, carbon diffuser and rear spoiler. Most of these visual touches will be available as an aftermarket kit to existing Mercedes-AMG S 63 and S 65 coupes.
There’s also a set of Brabus lightweight monoblock “Platinum Edition” 21-inch forged wheels, with an even larger set of 22-inchers available as an option.
